Welcome to Bolivia! Start the adventure in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. You'll go on a day trip to Biocentro Güembé to see macaws, toucans, peacocks, and other tropical birds, then go trekking through the green hills of Amboró National Forest. Continue to the high-altitude capital city of La Paz, which you'll get to know during a guided city tour. The trip takes you to Lake Titicaca next to enjoy the unique island setting of Isla del Sol and learn about indigenous traditions.

Back-track to La Paz midway through the itinerary. Go on a cable car ride or a food tour of the city before heading to the great white expanse of the Uyuni Salt Flats. Look for native wildlife in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve before crossing the border to Chile. You'll spend the last few days of the trip exploring the Atacama Desert. Begin the trip in the colonial gem of Sucre. You'll base yourself here for a few days, touring the city's markets and museums, then day-tripping to the Maragua Crater, where you'll learn about the development of weaving and textile traditions in the crater's villages. Transfer to Potosí next, where you'll visit the Casa de Moneda, one of the best museums in South America. You'll also descend deep into the Cerro Rico mine to learn about the history of Spanish mining in the region.

Stop to see ghost towns, geysers, lakes, and hot springs on the way to the red-hued Laguna Colorada, home to a large number of flamingos. On day nine, tour the Uyuni Salt Flats and the otherworldly Isla Incahuasi before taking an overnight bus back to La Paz. The rest of the trip is devoted to exploring Lake Titicaca and its islands, including hiking on Isla de la Luna and meeting locals to learn about traditional fishing, cooking, and crafts on Isla del Sol. Kick off the journey in La Paz. You'll adjust to the altitude and go on a walking tour in the adjacent city of El Alto before moving on to explore Lake Titicaca. Sleep under the stars on an island before visiting the agritourism project in the community of Santiago de Okola, where you'll have the chance to interact with members of the local indigenous group. Then it's onward to Apolobamba National Park to enjoy a trekking day and an Andean lunch, stopping at several tiny villages along the way.

Continue the hike to Charazani before heading back to the big city to do some more sightseeing in La Paz. The following day, you'll travel to the Amazon, where canoeing and hiking adventures await. Go rafting and birdwatching in Madidi National Park, followed by a once-in-a-lifetime river safari in Yacuma Forest— it's a fantastic opportunity to see caimans, capybaras, turtles, and the unique freshwater Amazonian pink river dolphin.
