Itinerary #1: El Calafate, Bariloche & Salta

On this two-week tour, you'll visit several of Argentina's most popular highlights, including the glaciers at El Calafate, the bright blue lakes in the region of Bariloche, and the colorful desert landscapes around Salta in the country's northwest.

Begin the adventure in Buenos Aires, where you'll tour the city, stopping at key attractions like the Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace) and the historic neighborhood of San Telmo. Then fly south to El Calafate the next day, where you'll see the massive Perito Moreno glacier up close and go on a boat tour through the icy waters of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (Glaciers National Park). Continue onto Bariloche in the Lake District on day six, enjoying traditional chocolates in town and going on a boat tour of Tristeza Sound.

Midway through the trip, you'll fly to the colonial city of Salta and pick up a rental car to explore the northern region of Argentina at your own pace. Side trips from Salta include a self-guided wine trip of the nearby Cafayate wine region, where you'll taste a range of locally produced wines at local wineries, and another to Cachi, where indigenous and Spanish traditions are evident in details from architecture to food. See some of Argentina's top destinations, including Buenos Aires, the wine-producing region of Mendoza, Salta and the northwest, and the gaucho town of San Antonio de Areco, on this two-week trip plan.

The trip begins in Buenos Aires, where you'll hit the ground running with several active adventures, including a tango lesson and a full-day bicycle tour of the city. Then you'll catch a flight to Bariloche for hiking in the mountains high above Lago Nahuel Huapi lake and wandering the streets of the waterfront Swiss-style town filled with chocolate shops. Go kayaking on another lake, Lago Mascardi, or opt for a mountain biking trip into the foothills of the Andes that ends at a local microbrewery for cold drinks. 

Fly to Mendoza, the heart of Argentina's wine scene, to visit several wineries for tours, tastings, and leisurely lunches with wine pairings. You'll take a cooking class one day and road-trip up into the Andes on another, picnicking on the shores of the bright blue lake at Portrerillos. Back in the city, dine at 1884, Francis Mallmann's signature restaurant in Mendoza, famous for its grilled meats and produce—and, of course, a great wine selection. You'll fly from Mendoza to Salta to discover the natural beauty of the Quebrada de Humahuaca landscapes and see expansive salt flats, spending the night in scenic Purmamarca. Sample dry white wines made in the region before flying back to Buenos Aires and driving out to the gaucho town of San Antonio de Areco. Itinerary #3: Epic Argentina Road Trip

Hit the road for this two-week adventure around Argentina's scenic north, including stops in picturesque Tilcara, the salt flats outside of Salta, and the wine-growing region of Cafayate.

Get into the swing of things in Buenos Aires, where your trip begins. You'll fly up to Salta and pick up a rental car to start exploring the north, starting with the pre-Inca fortification of Pucará de Tilcara and the village of Tilcara in the province of Jujuy. Explore the Salinas Grandes salt flats and the ghost towns nearby, continuing onward to the otherworldly red rock structures around San Antonio de los Cobres, where you'll spend a night. Tolar Grande, a tiny village in the striking landscape of the Puna de Atacama, is the next day's destination: make sure your camera battery is fully charged, as you'll be stopping along the way for photo ops.

Drive to Antofalla, passing the volcanic pyramid of Cono de Arita on the way. You'll stay in a family home near the salt flats of Antofalla on day eight, continuing to the small highland village of El Peñon. It's your base for side trips to Piedra Pomez, also known as the Pumice Stone Field, a vision of white volcanic rocks, and Carachi Pampa, a young volcano. Getting thirsty? Head to the wine region of Cafayate to try local varietals and pull over for views of Quebrada de las Conchas, a valley of red canyons. Itinerary #4: Highlights of Northern Argentina

Sip wine by the Andes, hike through gorges and desert scenery, and see the waterfalls of Iguazú on this two-week itinerary around Argentina's northern region.

On this journey to the west and north of Argentina, you'll begin in Buenos Aires, getting acclimated in the city before making the short side trip to the gaucho town of San Antonio de Areco for a taste of traditional countryside life. Head back to Buenos Aires to board a quick domestic flight to Mendoza. In the wine-growing region, you'll taste Malbec at the place where it's made, going on tastings and tours at several wineries, taking a cooking class where you'll learn the secrets behind the classic Argentine asado (barbecue), and driving up into the foothills of the Andes to take in views of snow-capped mountains and condors flying overhead.

Moving onto Salta, the next destination on the itinerary, you'll ride a cable car up to Cerro San Bernardo for sweeping views of the region you'll be exploring for the next few days. Sip Torrontés, a dry, floral white wine, in nearby Cafayate wine region before checking out the unusual rock formations in the Quebrada del Río de las Conchas. On day ten, explore the beautiful Quebrada de Humahuaca, an arid desert valley famous for its colorful cliffs and gorges, ending up at  La Paleta del Pintor (The Painter's Palette), so named for its vibrantly hued mountains. Finish the tour in the far north of the country, where the immense waterfalls of Iguazú, straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, await. You'll spot exotic butterflies and monkeys while hiking in the national park—and if you're feeling extra adventurous, take an exhilarating boat ride to the base of the falls. Itinerary #5: Best of Argentine Patagonia 

See the best of Argentina's side of Patagonia on this two-week trip plan that includes a cruise on the Beagle Channel, trekking on glaciers, and hiking in windswept national parks.

Start in Buenos Aires, then fly to El Calafate on day two. You'll trek on Perito Moreno glacier the next day, part of Los Glaciares National Park, and see massive pieces of ice falling off and splashing into the water below. On the three-hour drive to El Chaltén, nicknamed "hiker's paradise," you'll enjoy incredible views of Mount Fitz Roy from the car window. You'll hike to its summit the next day, and then to Mirador Cerro Torre on day seven, ending up at the glacial lake of Laguna Torre.

Head back to El Calafate and catch a flight to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, in Tierra del Fuego. You'll go trekking and canoeing in Tierra del Fuego National Park, then take a cruise around the Beagle Channel. Highlights on the boat tour include a sea lion colony, Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, and a quick stop at an island for a short and scenic hike. The end of the trip is all about penguins: on a full-day excursion to Isla Martillo and Estancia Harberton, you'll see hundreds or even thousands of penguins in their natural habitat.
