Arriving in Kalimantan, you'll gain insight into local culture, including animistic folk religion and music and dance, at Tumbang Malahoi. Then spend a day in Palangkaraya (the capital of Borneo's Central Kalimantan province) before your three-day riverboat cruise into the Borneo jungle. You'll take time out to canoe in search of orangutans and proboscis monkeys; visit an Orangutan rehabilitation center on Palas Island; and explore Dayak villages, such as the tiny riverside community of Kanarakan, plus the ancient Dayak painted sandungs (tombs) at Bukit Rawi and Sigi.
Following your river sojourn, you'll fly via the coastal city of Balikpapan to Maratua in the Derawan Islands for four days of relaxing on talcum white beaches, swimming in turquoise waters, and perhaps cycling through mangrove forests. Here, you'll visit the traditional weaving center of Sa'dan and hike through rice terraces and bamboo forests to Batutumonga to stay in a tongkonan traditional house. Then take a guided cultural tour of Tana Toraja, experiencing the cliff-side tau-tau wooden effigies of the dead, the old stone megaliths of Sada, and the silk weaving workshops of Tansitolo.
