In February, winter in India is nearing its end. Most of the country is reasonably cool and dry at this time. While the weather is pleasant in February, there are fewer visitors than in December and January, making this a good month to beat the crowds.

Weather

The weather in North India is generally warm in February, while South India is hot. In the Himalaya, the weather is warming up at this time, meaning that conditions are more appealing for trekking. Temperatures in Dharamshala, for example, usually hover between 48°F and 73°F.

In February, Delhi experiences moderate temperatures between 75°F and 52°F. During this month, the haze and fog that hang over the city during the colder months begin to abate. This is a good time to visit India’s Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur).

February is a dry month in South India, with the monsoon season firmly over in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Temperatures are in the 90s in these states, as they are all year round.

In northwest India, Bengal begins to get hotter during February. If you’re planning on visiting Kolkata, it’s preferable to go in December or January, before temperatures start to climb.

Crowds & Costs

February is a popular time to travel in India, but this marks the beginning of shoulder season. The crowds of December and January, on break from school and work in their home countries, will have thinned. Prices are likely to be moderate during this time.

Where to Go

With cool temperatures and greater visibility than the previous few months, February is an ideal month to visit the main attractions of North India. Delhi’s Red Fort, the world-famous Taj Mahal in Agra, and Jaipur’s many magnificent buildings are all must-sees. For a full tour of the Golden Triangle, you can check out this six-day itinerary.

If you’re not a fan of rainy days, this is also a great time to visit Kerala and Tamil Nadu. By traveling in February, you’ll avoid the flooding, copious mud, and muggy weather of the monsoon season. In addition, Mumbai is very dry in February, and temperatures are reasonable.

What to Do

If you’d like to visit North India in February, there are many different ways you could plan your trip. For those with limited time, the famous attractions of Delhi and Agra can be covered within a few days. However, if you have more time to spare, this region offers countless other things to see.

The spiritually-inclined can head east to the sacred city and pilgrimage site of Varanasi, located on the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh. Or, for a romantic getaway, head west to Rajasthan, where the white city of Udaipur beckons in travelers with its majestic havelis (traditional mansions) and calm, clear lakes.

If you’d prefer to head further south, Mumbai offers plenty of attractions, too. A short ferry ride from the Gateway of India takes you to the fascinating Elephanta Caves, where you can see enormous stone carvings dedicated to the god Shiva. If you’re lucky, you may catch the Elephanta Festival, a music and dance festival taking place in late January or early February each year. While in Mumbai, don’t forget to taste some of the city’s famous street foods, like bhel puri or vada pav.

Events in February

India is a land of year-round festivals, and several major events take place in February. If you’re in Rajasthan, you can stop by Jaisalmer to attend the Desert Festival, which showcases many local traditions including the art of turban-tying. Jaisalmer is also known for its sand-colored havelis and as a starting point for touring the Thar Desert by camel.

If you’d rather try something a little different, you can check out the Carnival celebrations in Goa later in the month. Like the more famous Carnival in Brazil, the Goa Carnival is a product of the state’s Portuguese heritage. Parade floats and colorful costumes mark this festive occasion, celebrating the period before the beginning of Lent.
