Holaaa! I'm Karen, proudly Mexican and native from a small city called Tlaxcala. In the last 4 years, I’ve been exploring Mexico and I love to share with the world the authentic Mexico that I’m in love with, full of culture, nature and wonderful people, but most importantly I love traveling with a positive impact and connecting
I’ll be more than happy to share my experiences and knowledge to help you design an authentic trip in Mexico

How did you get involved in travel?

"I studied international tourism with the idea of traveling around the world, and while I was studying I realized I was missing out on so many incredible places in Mexico, how was I going to tell the people how incredible my country is if I haven’t seen it? So, I decided to plan my first trip alone at eighteen, I went to the Riviera Maya for 2 months and I fell in love with the feeling of being whoever I want to be, the feeling of being in a place for the first time and getting surprised.
The best part is that now I’m part of Rutopia and I want to connect travelers with the authenticity of my country by getting to know the local communities.
"

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Last year I had the opportunity to go to Chiapas, to be honest, it wasn’t my favorite state nor on my top list, but at the end of the trip, I was stunning by all the beauty, history, archeological sites, the food, the incredible people, the nature and the incredible views.
The best part was at Las Tres Tzimoleras, I don’t even know how to start to describe this activity, but I jumped in a waterfall, I saw an incredible view of the forest and the waterfalls and I rappelled in a waterfall, all these incredible things in one day, what a crazy thing, but it was awesome. We thought we were going to be part of a small tour, but much to our suprise and delight, we were provided with our own special and private guide at every city. We felt like royalty!

Hotel Reviews
Hotel B Urban Xaman
Cuauhtémoc, Centro, Mexico City

We loved spending time in the roofop lounge where we had a panoramic view of the lights of the city. The layout of the hotel was quite impressive and we appreciated the open plan, the use of furnishings that appear to highight the local products. They even had a welcoming seating area in front of each elevator. in our room, we were provided our choice of beverages (tea, coffee) and beautiful teapots, mugs. We were surprised with what appear to be a yoga or prayer mat. How thoughtful! The restaurant had wall to wall windows that allowed natural light. We went for breakfast, and liked the various assortment to choose from --- however, we weren't as excited with the flavors of the foods offered there as we were with the food we tasted at the rooftop lounge. Who knew that bar food would be better than the restaurant's?

Authenticity & Character
Open plan, makes it feel so large and spacious. Love the rooftop lounge with panoramic views. Also liked the way it was furnished --- gave us a sense of the native and culture-inspired furnishings.
Location
Great location --- easy to walk around, was right across a large park, easy access to public transportation.
Staff
They were responsive and attentive enough...but they could use people with more proficiency in English which is an international language spoken by most travelers from different countries.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Exceptiionally clean.
Casona de los Sapos Hotel Boutique
Puebla

This was absolutely our favorite hotel of all! From the moment we walked in, seeing the multi-story open courtyard, we knew we were in for a treat. So beautiful and almost magical. We just had to take pictures of the atrium. Every level of the hotel was thoughtfully designed --- they retained the original stonework, and carefully augmented what was there. They had sitting areas in every nook, and each one was comfortable and beautiful and provided certain amount of privacy, Every single guest we noticed who just checked in seemed to have the same impression and started taking pictures. Who wouldn't be? It's a stunning boutique hotel.

Authenticity & Character
Loved all the architectural details. They kept the original stonework. Our suite was stunning. Every thing was a beautiful. We were amazed at the quality of the furnishings --- nothing cheap here.
Location
Great location next to a plaza, very walkable to restaurants, shops, etc.
Staff
Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We especially loved our server during dinner, Indira. She was delightful to speak with.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Goodness, if only every single hotel was like this! We even observed someone painstakingly cleaning a lamp.

Discover Mexican Gastronomy at San Juan Market
Mexico City

We liked going through this experience with our guide Adrian who turned out to be a well-traveled chef with a lot of experience. We loved that he provided a very detailed commetary on every place we visited, every thing we tasted.

Quality of Experience
We liked the diversity of our experience --- street food, market food, restaurant dining.
Food
It's a matter of personal taste......I'm sure the food is great for some people. I was prepared to like the food, but I wasn't fond of Mexican food before, and can't say I'm fond of it now.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
We didn't drive anywhere this time, but we did walk around a lot. This may be challenging for people with mobility problems. Walking around can be challenging because the pavements are so uneven and there are lots of unexpected things jutting out (my partner fell because of one such thing).
Discover the National Museum of Anthropology
Mexico

This was probably our favorite of all the things we did during this tour. We were so amazed at the beauty and quality of the museum. Simply fantastic at how every single artifact was presented. This truly stoked our interest in the history of Mexico and we are so happy to be introduced this way. One day isn't enough, but our guide was smart to point out the things that should matter to people who are interested in the history and culture of this country.

Quality of Experience
We were especially mesmerized by the sectiion that showed the pyramids that were already unearthed. We were glad to have been introduced to this first before actually visiting the pyramids themselves.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Of all our guides, Paola was our favorite. We sensed how much she loved what she does, and how excited she gets pointing out certain things we should know. We delighted in her sense of humor and how dedicated she in in what she does. Her happiness and pride in her country are so obvious, and we were happy to see that
Transport
Paola was also our driver, and she narrated as she drove through the city. That was a plus.
A journey through the history of Chapultepec.
Mexico City

We were thrilled to visit this place, and to know its history. So many fascinating facts, and such spectacular views.

Quality of Experience
The hall with were incredible stained glass windows. Beautiful artwork!
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Paola was an incredible guide --- so knowledgeable, so pleasant, so nice to be with!
Transport
Paola used her personal car which was comfortable, to take us around
Biking in Teotihuacán "The City of the Gods" & Overnight in Puebla
Mexico

We didn't ride bikes, and I wouldn't recommend that to elderly or physically-challenged guests. So we chose to be transported in the car. We were thrilled to actually visit the pyramids, and even walked up to certain areas although the steps could be challenging. Just knowing the existence of such pyramids was a treat in itself, especially being told that there are more pyramids, but they haven't been excavated yet. Rather bothered that many of the murals are uncovered and not protected from the elements. As such they are deteriorating and may disappear someday.

Quality of Experience
Wish we saw evidence that the murals are being protected for future generations.
Food
We were taken to a restaurant where all tourist vans/buses converged. Although our server was pleasant enough, we were served what everyone else got. I saw food served to other customers that I wish we could have ordered, but it wasn't offered to us.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Our guide was knowledgeable and chose the right places to visit, but he lacked a certain spark to his personality, as if he's just going through the motions, and is not that engaged with his audience.
Transport
We like having a private driver, but not so thrilled that his English is so limited. We couldn't converse with him until our guiide joined us.
Corn & Markets in the Magical Town of Cholula
Mexico

We enjoyed going to the market ---- but we had gone to a market before in Mexico City and didn't really want to go to another market. This activity could have been taken off our itinerary The place where the proprietor showed us various types of corn, how to grind it, and how to make tortilla was an interesting experience. We liked that we were invited to try our hand in this, and then to eat there.

Quality of Experience
We were surprised that our tour ended at 1 pm and we were left to fend for ourselves for the rest of the day. Seems like there is so much more we could have done, or have been shown in this Cholula and Puebla. Rather disappointed there wasn't anything else planned for us. Maybe a short drive around to see the city and point out highlights should have been added to the day.
Food
This is a mixed bag for us. After the corn tour, we would have appreciated being taken to a local restaurant where we could have experienced other types of Mexican foods other than tortillas. So we were happy that our hotel has a fabulous restaurant that offered a tasting 5-course meal with wine pairing. Otherwise, our whole dining experience would have been a total bust.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
We llked Maria, a teacher who excelled at what she taught us during the very short tour. She was the highlight of our day.
Transport
We were happy to have our private driver and tour guide.
Walk in a Cactus Forest: Tehuacán-Cuicuitlan Biosphere Reserve
Mexico

This was a total bust.... Our original driver was in an accident so they sent a substitute driver who barely spoke English. We were driven to where we were supposed to go the Biosphere, but no one spoke Engligh, and no one seemed to know anything about it, or what to do. What was hysterical is that there was a young man who had Receptionist embroidered on his jacket, and who was standing right in front of a huge billboard promoting Biosfera, but he was clueless about it!. There was not a single English-speaking person or guide who can tell us anything!

Quality of Experience
Can't think of anything other than having people who know what and where Biosphhere is, and can speak Engligh.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Our poor driver was trying...but we lost internet signal and we couldn't utilize our translator app to communicate, and he had to rely on pure instinct to get around
Transport
Good enough transportation, but we're wondering if a 4-wheeled vehicle might have been better in those conditions.
Visit Mitla, the Tule Tree, Hierve el Agua, a Mezcal Distillery & Teotitlán del Valle
Oaxaca

We absolutely loved seeing this old and huge tree, and were happy to walk around the plaza. Our highest praise is reserved for the archaeological sites. Our guide Alex was thoroughly knowledgeable and his commentary interspersed historical facts with folklore that made them so much more interesting. We were wowed by our visit to the petrified waterfalls and the pools, and driving up the mountains so that we can appreciare the countryside. Of course, the visit to the mescal distillery was a revelation. We chose to eat while we were doing the mescal tasting where our young guide was such a credible expert that he made the experience so wonderful.

Quality of Experience
The archaeological site was an eye-opener. The distillery was quite enjoyable, but we would recommend getting something to eat while tasting. It makes the experience complete. Be brave and try the fried grasshoppers --- like eating popcorn. Hard to stop munching!
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Alex was an incredible guide. Loved that he provided so much background regarding the historical figures who made an impact on the people and the country. He pointed out so many things that it whetted our appetite to learn more about the history of Mexico.
Transport
Alex was our personal guide and driver, and he spoke fluent English. He was constantly pointing out things as we drove, and walked. Never a break in his commemtary
History, Culture & Gastronomy on the Streets of Oaxaca
Oaxaca

Loved walking around the neighborhoods, seeing the colorful murals, street decorations. It was fascinating to walk through the historic district and seeing the architectural details on the buildings. Glad that these re preserved for future generations to enjoy. Loved visiting the churches, one of which was such an incredible thing of beauty inside and out, and trumps all others. It was breathtaingly beautiful. Also enjoyed tasting street foods. We also liked that we stoppef to eat ice cream in such a colorful place in the plaza. What a special treat! However, after having gone to the markets in Mexico City and Cholula, we could have skipped going to another in Oaxaca :)

Quality of Experience
We saw so much. The variety of experience, the diversity in everything we saw, did, tasted.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Alex. was the ultimate guide and driver. So knowledgeable, experience, conversational. Couldn't have asked for anyone better!
Transport
Having our personal driver and guide was an amazing plus!

The company did a good job with follow up and being flexible on starting times, etc..

A few minor things that could be improved. Number one -we did not have a return flight to Oaxaca from Huatulco so we had to book that separately and we were surprise the tour company did not pick up on this. Fortunately, we discovered it a month before the trip and were able to get the tickets . Our guide Margaux was our favorite, but Alejandro and Perfecto were also great guides and we feel like we really saw the various aspects of Oaxaca, and Huatulco.
I would suggest they eliminate small group tours as those days did not go off as well as private guided trips, and we would’ve preferred to continue with a private guide. One day we were stuck with a guide and a group they did not speak English and that was very disappointing, but they reimbursed us for this tour. In hindsight with 10 days of touring, it would’ve been better to just stick with private guides or at least allow that option. Overall , I thought the company did a good job and was very responsive to text. I would definitely recommend them to get a in-depth feel for the region. Thanks for making our anniversary special.

Los Pilares
Oaxaca

We love the location, though it was a bit of a walk to the central area. The staff were amazingly wonderful and friendly. The room was off the courtyard, but very dark. Also, we were below the kitchen, so the noise of furniture moving was very loud at night, but died down at around 10 o’clock. There were not many restaurants around except Le Bice Probre that served local cuisine but we walked to town a lot and found great restaurants. The pillows are way too big, so we use towels as our pillows. My only complaint besides the pillows was breakfast. It was delicious but service was supposed to begin at 7:30 yet that was merely a suggestion. We would get there at 7:30 but we couldn’t get coffee till 7:45 and therefore could not make a tour at 8 o’clock. Fortunately, we figured this out on day two and were able to pre-order our breakfast on a day. We had an 8 o’clock start. It does seem with such a beautiful, quaint hotel as this that they could have a coffee station or place you could get coffee prior to 7:30 do in the morning. Other than that we love this place.

It’s great that such a small hotel has six restaurants to choose from and all of them are good. We generally are not resort people, but this hotel was very nice and comfortable. The grocery store .4 miles away was a wonderful bonus because the wine at the hotel wasn’t that great and was very pricey. Staff are friendly and it was an easy walk to town. We are not resort people so we took day tours and enjoyed the birding and hiking. The water was cold as it was January so we did not do much swimming.

Archeology and handicrafts in Monte Alban, Arrazola, Cuilapam and Coyotepec
Oaxaca

Our guide was long on explanation, but short on facts, so it made the tour of Monte Alban de tedious. Also, there was intense sun, and most people did not bring enough water, so it was a little bit uncomfortable to stand for hours, rather than sit in the shade, while he gave explanations. The rest of the days tour was very disjointed because we didn’t know we were having lunch and we had eaten snacks. In the workshops felt more geared toward shopping rather than details on the method of the art. In hindsight, I would’ve skipped the second half and just gone to town to shop.

One of our favorite days because we were able to walk in the mountains that were so beautiful. We saw lots of birds and enjoyed the company of Margaux who is our guide. Walk among the waterfalls and coffee plantations
Mexico

This trip was our least favorite. For one thing it was moved from 9 o’clock to 10:30 AM and we had hope that meant we would shorten the trip instead of extend the evening. Our driver spoke no English even though we were promised one and the rest the group – five – also did not speak English so we were unable to learn anything about the environment or local culture. We stopped at an organic shop and that had an English-speaking Guide which was wonderful. When we got to the waterfalls we had no idea how much time we had before lunch so we rushed through twice and our guy did not tell us that lunch would not be served until 4:15 PM. We left around 5:30pm and didn’t get back to the city until 6:40pm which made us miss our dinner reservation. Overall, it was a waste of a vacation day, but the falls were pretty. We would’ve enjoyed the more and we known we were going to have two hours to see them. When I reached out to complain to the Tours operator that ours was supposed to be an English at first, he was rather brash. However, he has, since agreed to reimburse us for this tour, and that is only fair as we lost a day of vacation

She took everything we discussed on board and planned our 11 day trip with all our specifications in mind. The process of planning was very smooth and we had regular contact with Karen with additional updates to the itinerary. She was very receptive to any changes we needed to make and was extremely helpful in reorganising part of the trip when I made an error with flights.

The holiday itself was exceptional. We knew at all times who we needed to meet and where we needed to meet them and had daily correspondence with Ximena over What's app.
The mix of activities and excursions was exactly what we had hoped for and I feel like we got to experience a broad view of Mexico.
Our personal highlights were the food tasting and historical tours in Mexico City where we had private tours with some very experienced chefs.
We also got to experience some eco-tourism on the Yucutan and get an idea of modern Mayan culture. One of the best parts of our trip was the cultural emersion tour in Nuevo Durango. Because of these small tours we got to visit lots of hidden cenotes and small villages that we would otherwise never have been aware of.

Every day of our trip had an excursion planned but left plenty of time to explore locally in the evenings. I cannot recommend kimkim, and Karen in particular, enough. I would never have been able to plan such a varied trip without her.

Cabins in Nuevo Durango

We stayed in one of the cabins in Nuevo Durango as part of a cultural tour of the area and it was one of the best nights we spent in Mexico. The cabin itself is rustic and sparse but very clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The cabins each had a toilet and shower and mosquito net for protection. The wifi didn't stretch to the cabin but this didn't limit the experience in any way, and moreso created an unplugged, relaxing night. We had delicious lunch, dinner, and breakfast, all cooked locally and our guide, Jose, was really excellent at showing us around the area and bringing us to the cenote in the centre of the town.

Great location with easy access to town and nice local restaurants. We felt very safe in the area and there were always plenty of people around. The room was beautiful and comfortable and the staff at the front desk were very helpful. Breakfast each morning was delicious with a good variety of Mexican and international food on the menu. Our only issue was with the timing of the room cleaning. We arrived back from trips late in the afternoon most days and our room hadn't yet been cleaned and on one occasion the cleaner arrived while we were in our room (around 4pm) and we had to leave for half an hour while the bathroom bins were emptied and the room cleaned. Despite this we really enjoyed our stay and would happily visit again.

Biking in Teotihuacan, "The City of the Gods"
Mexico City

Really pleasant morning biking around Teotihuacan with our guide. We got to visit one of the nearby caves and learn a bit about Aztec customs and auras which was fun! A light lunch was included which was enjoyable before heading back out in the sun. We also had a visit to a local craftsman who showed us how some of the obsidian ornaments are created. Our guide was great and full of information about the mathematics and construction of the pyramids. Really enjoyable tour overall

Float in the Muyil Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve

Cannot recommend this tour enough. The reserve has a gentle current so we spent 40 mins in a very relaxing natural lazy river. Our guide filled us in on how the Mayans used the lagoon and pointed out native plants and fossils as we drifted along. We really didn't want to leave!

Enjoyed using Rutopia (Marisol and Melina) to plan my trip to Mexico. Marisol helped me figure out the best options fand booked everything. Melina was my in country support. Rutopia (the company through Kim Kim) is great and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take the burden out of vacation planning. My son and I truly enjoyed the trip knowing everything was taken care of and we just had to have fun. Thanks! read more

Hotel El Moro
Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo

We went with this hotel as we were only staying a night and wanted quick access to the snorkeling at Puerto Morales. It's a small homey hotel. It's not fancy but the staff is great and had a good feel to it.

Snorkeling in the beautiful marine park of Puerto Morelos
Mexico

Really enjoyed the company and the guides. Being an avid snorkeling, I would have liked knowing ahead of time that you are required to wear a life jacket while snorkeling. I understand it is to protect the coral but for me, I would have liked to know about it to determine if I would have chosen to snorkel somewhere else.

Too many stops to pick up others. It was supposed to be a 7 hour trip and it was 10hours. The transportation was just too long and too many pick ups.
