Megan Lower

I am the director of Wanderlust Voyages and the primary point of contact for travelers. I view travel as a way to expand your world view, learning about different cultures and immersing yourself in the local experience. I'm not a fan of traveling halfway around the world (or even just across the nearest border) just to stay in familiar hotels, eat familiar food, and try to go about the cities/towns the way you would at home. Travel is about enjoying new destinations and experiences to their fullest, which means visiting local restaurants, unique accommodations, and, when possible, talking to local residents.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"All of Morocco. From Tangier to the Sahara to Marrakech, and everything in between. Whether you are looking for luxury, adventure, history, or any combination thereof, we can put together the perfect itinerary for you. "

How did you get involved in travel?

"I am a lawyer-turned-travel-expert, a journey that began with my first trip to the Sahara Desert. I was so enchanted with Morocco, and the desert region in particular, that I wanted to share it with everyone. This started the conversation with my husband, Belghit (who was born in nearby Rissani), about how we could accomplish bringing friends, family, anyone and everyone to explore the wonders of Morocco. Since then, I dove headfirst into the travel business, expanding my knowledge of both the industry and Morocco. I've already been there more times than I can count, and each time I go, I visit more accommodations, try out new activities, and seek to increase my knowledge of the country."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Oh, so many... From transportation adventures to interactions with wild animals to weather failing to cooperate, there are always things that can make travel a unique experience. However, one of the most eye-opening and unique experiences was part of that first trip to the Sahara. I went to visit the home where Belghit grew up. It was a mud-brick house part of an ancient ksar that dates back to the 1700s. Making our way through the winding path inside, cool in the dark away from the bright sun, passing by old mule stalls, a well that once served as their primary source of water, and climbing up the winding steps to bare mud rooms, each opening into a central courtyard. The kitchen still contained a daubed mud oven for baking bread and no running water. It looked like something that you would expect to be from centuries past, not a mere two decades. And yet, that's how Belghit grew up, running down the road to his family's date farm. It was an incredible experience, very eye-opening, and one I will never forget."

Megan, Winnie and Hassan are a winning team! In the year and a half of planning it took to get this trip launched, Megan and Winnie were consistently respondent and patient through all the details and needs we had over time. Megan really listened to what I was looking for, adjusted the itinerary I had planned on my own, and provided all the sites we wanted. I can tell that she took the time to make the best itinerary for us. Winnie's ability to manage the fine details, always with a smile was greatly appreciated. I've worked with several partners of KimKim and I think this was the best of all 4.

As for Hassan, he MADE our trip. From the moment he stepped into the van, we became a mini-family. His presence and leadership made us feel well supported, protected and cared for in every way. He provided us with just the right amount of information as we travelled through the country. Both he and Lacksen were true professionals. If we needed anything, the two of them showed up in a whim. We could see that Hassan would do whatever it took to give us a satisfactory experience and in the end, it went well beyond our expectations. Truly flawless.

Minor change I'd suggest to the itinerary - give one more day to Fez and one less day in Tangier. Or cut Tangier out altogether. Going to Asilah was not worth a day; it felt like padding.

Also, for Megan - there was conflicting advice on the tipping. Winnie told us 100 per day for the driver/guide and you told us 50. The information in the guide said something else as well. I know it's up to our discretion but being consistent internally is recommended.

*The airport pickup was a mess. 4 of us had to take cabs - 2 of whom were alone in an unfamiliar country. My sister & I took a cab - even though the driver had our names. The owner of the transportation service was rude to me on the phone when I didn't ask my cab driver to turn around and go back to the airport.

Fez top and tour went well too, similar to Marrakesh.
Chefchaouen was a great stop and glad I did spend a day there even unguided. Would have probably preferred to do 2 days there and maybe just 1 in Fes.

Driver (Ahmed) performed his job ok, no major issues.

Overall the Riads were good but there were issues.
Had an issue with the 2nd one in Marrakesh (Des Trois Palais) as they did not have me on the list to check-in and had to wait about 2 hours for them to have my room ready. Also did not like the one in Fes. It was not the same Riad as in description (Dar Tresor), but was Dar Chrifa. Smallest room I had in entire trip was in at the top of building (4th floor) - smaller than the mountain gite. Was next to the terrace; 3 separate times in 2 days I had people pounding on my door to enter the terrace. It is not marked and is very dark there. Do not book a single at that location, the other rooms were massive compared to that.

Our trip to Morocco felt like a dream! We were picked up by our driver Mohamed at the airport and started our journey! Mohamed was amazing and such a gem! He was very knowledgeable and felt like family by the end of our trip! He was fantastic and put up with all of our craziness! We learned a great deal from Mohamed and would hands down recommend him as your driver/guide!
We started our trip in Casablanca and headed to Chefchaouen which was beautiful! Our accommodation wasn't our favourite but we made the most of it. The Blue City is beautiful and definitely worth the visit! We also had a day trip to
Akchour Falls which is beautiful and we were able to swim near the falls!
We then headed to Fes and stayed at Riad Farouzi Fes which was AMAZING! This place will always hold a special place in my heart based on the service we received! Badar was amazing and make our stay extra special! We were celebrating my birthday later in the trip but they surprised me with music and cake upon our arrival and it's a special memory I'll always cherish! The hospitality was amazing and the riad is beautiful and spacious! We felt like royalty! We did a walking tour with another guide named Mohammed who was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot!
We then headed to Merzouga which was magical! Our stay in the Sahara felt like a dream come true! The sunset camel ride was unbelievable and our guide Hassan made the camel ride memorable! Hotel Cafe du Sud was an amazing tent experience and we were welcomed by friendly faces and service!
We then headed to Ouarzazate and stayed at Les temple des Arts which was very luxurious and beautiful! We had a slight issue with our room that was handled right away with no hiccups and we were treated like royalty and it was a lovely place to wake up to on my birthday!
We finally then embarked to Marrakech which was better than I could have imagined! We stayed at Riad Karmela which was beautiful and was fortunate to get the best room in the Riad with a balcony overlooking the courtyard! The staff at this Riad were remarkable and was a great highlight from our trip!
Kim Kim/Megan were very kind to throw in a surprise motorbike sidecar tour of Marrakech which was another highlight of our trip! It was very neat to see the city this way and a memory I will always treasure!

This is probably the best trip I've ever been on, which says a lot coming from someone who enjoys travelling quite often! I want to thank Megan for her services, and I especially want to thank Mohamed our driver, without him, our trip would not have been as memorable as it was, and I'll always remember our conversations during our long drives! We're now his favourite crazy Canadian girls! :)

Overall our trip to Morocco was wonderful. Loved the country, the culture and the people we met. There were a few issues on the trip. The drivers were changed without giving us notice ahead of time . Upon arrival at the airport, we discovered that we had a new driver. Mustapha Azigane was great driver for the trip. He was very personable, knowledgeable and handled all the questions we through at him, always on time, and had a great vehicle. Liked the SUV for easy in and out of the vehicle and to roll down the window to take some picture in route. Then we were advised on our drive to Marrakech we would have a new driver but we made sure Mustapha gave us the walking tour guide contact info and our new driver info. Yassine Hajjij drove us to Essaouira and then the airport the next day and he was fabulous.
The itinerary was good but we were disappointed when we found out on our way to Fes by other travellers that the medina would be shut down for the holiday the next day. The driver checked and said our tour was still on but we missed a lot of things that I found out after. Given that Meknes had all the sites closed, we could have arrived in Fes sooner and toured the medina when it was open. Or the itinerary could have been adjusted accordingly as we could have changed our dates had we known this. The major disappointment was the itinerary said we would have the option to take the camels or 4 x 4 from the desert camp back to the hotel to meet our driver. We were not given that option. We were told the night before that it was 4 x 4. Also the itinerary said there would be entertainment at the desert camp and there was none. Another couple at the site also commented on these things as they also had their tour done by Wendy. The itinerary was not clear on lunches and dinners that were included which luckily our driver advised us (i.e. Fes lunch and Ouarzazate dinner) and we started asking each day after the first time it happened. There are a couple of things I would change on the itinerary but again overall it was an amazing trip. Highly recommend travelling to Morocco.

The hotel was in a great location but the service was either lacking in some areas or over the top pushy that made us uncomfortable. The porters were called to meet our car but we started on our own and we never saw anyone until after we arrived at the door. They then stood and watched as we carried our luggage down the stairs and then they came over to take over. The staff then had us sit and proceeded to push us to make a dinner reservation and then took our passports while we sat and waited a while. Eventually they came by with tea and we asked about our passports and they eventually gave them back with the room key. When the porters insisted on taking our luggage when going to the room, one of them carried the luggage off the ground by the extended handle and I thought he was going to break it. When he carried it that way across the room and twisted the luggage at times while holding the extended handle, I had to tell him not to carry the luggage that way and why.. The service for breakfast was slow and not consistent. I think the staff was trying to work too many tables as we had different people come to the table and we had to ask several times for things. For example, they missed the eggs order and the tea order and there was no orange juice at the table for our second day so we knew it should have been provided. Issues compounded the second day as they had us sit at a table that wasn't set up so we had to keep asking for napkins, cutlery and more. Our area was not busy but perhaps the staff was busy elsewhere.

Authenticity & Character
Beautiful decor in the waiting area and eating area. Nice rooftop deck to see the sun set.
Location
Centrally located for access to the medina
Staff
Porters need training on needs for customers and how to carry luggage properly and breakfast service staff need to be more focused.

Fabulous location, staff, room and breakfast!!!! Beware lots of stairs as we were on the top floor so crazy if you have heavy luggage but the room made up for it. The only thing not rating it 5 stars was we couldn't use the room top deck to enjoy the view and sunset as it was under construction. The staff at the reception desk, porting luggage from the parking lot and the breakfast staff were wonderful. Enjoyed talking to the reception team.....all women who have accomplished so much with their education degrees and careers. They are definitely an asset to this place.

Fabulous arrival on camel to the tented camp. Beautiful spot in the desert not near a lot of other places. There was minimal communication from staff so discovered meal timing on our own and stumbled on pickup the next day after we were wandering on our own as the other two couples had already left. We were advised by the person who booked that there would be entertainment but there wasn't. We could hear music from another camp nearby. But one of the highlights was the fellow who provided the astronomical information (the guiding of the north star). He was outstanding. Glad he approached us after our dinner. Breakfast and dinner were good. Key advice for future travellers - only take a knapsack with you for things you need overnight at the camp and leave your luggage at the hotel.

Authenticity & Character
Great to experience the desert. Would prefer to stay in the desert rather than the hotel. If you are short on time, skip the hotel and stay in the desert. One night in the tented camp is all you need for the experience of the Sahara.
Location
Glad to be distanced from most of the other camps.
Staff
Communication of information is needed as noted previously
Cleanliness & Comfort
When we arrived the toilet wasn't clean so we cleaned it ourselves and asked for kleenex/tissues as the box was empty. They provided it later for us after we advised them. The rooms were comfortable.

The dinner and serving staff were amazing. Rooms comfortable. The only thing is the location is not the best. I wish more things to see were in walking distance. Plus it was on a dirt road so walking along the street wasn't good.

Great location, fabulous breakfast, and excellent staff. The breakfast was excellent and the fellow who served us was outstanding. He was so personable and remembered what we wanted each day so it just arrived at the table. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious, quiet and comfortable.
