Overview
Situated in Takayama, Ryokan Asunaro, originally a sanctuary for samurai warriors dating back to the 16th century, has undergone meticulous restoration and relocation to provide guests with an authentic Japanese experience. Strategically placed, the ryokan (a traditional inn) is just an 8-minute drive from Hida Folk Village, where you can learn about rural life and architecture from the region during the Edo period (1603–1868). While some guests may find the location secluded, its tranquil setting enhances the inn's charm, offering a serene retreat from the urban hustle and bustle. As you enter, you'll step out of your shoes into a spacious main lounge adorned with a sunken hearth, ancient Japanese elm wood beams, and a soaring ceiling.
The rooms at Ryokan Asunaro exude a sense of beauty and tranquility, with various earthy wall colors and traditional features, including tatami floors, futons, and chabudai (low Japanese dining tables). Daylight streams through fusuma (sliding panels), brightening the furnished rooms. You must book an upgraded room if you'd like a private bathroom. The inn also has spacious family rooms, perfect for large groups. You'll receive a yukata (robe) during your stay to ensure you're comfortable.
If you'd like to relax during your stay at Ryokan Asunaro, take a dip in the indoor pool or indulge in a massage. The inn's restaurant serves regional specialty dishes prepared by the head chef, so you can sample the local cuisine without leaving the property. If you're in the mood for some exploration, free bicycle rentals are available to explore the surrounding town. After a long day of sightseeing, you can unwind with a rejuvenating soak in the inn's official Hida Takayama onsen, known for its therapeutic properties.
