Sharon Louthian

American by birth and Moroccan-Berber by marriage, I first traveled to Morocco as a tourist and fell in love with the country and its people (one in particular). Since my initial visit, I have traveled extensively throughout the country and especially enjoy discovering secret places off of the beaten path. Together with Abderrahman Idrissi, my Moroccan husband who has over 20 years experience in the tourism industry, we enlisted the help of his brothers (who serve as our in-country tour managers) to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. As a family business, we enjoy developing relationships with our guests that continue beyond their trips to Morocco and our goal is for our guests to leave with a little of our love for the country and its people.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"People always ask me what there is to do in Morocco and I always reply that an easier question would be what can't you do there! And we can help you with all of it. Of course, we share the rich history and the important landmarks that any tour to Morocco includes, but we also provide unique opportunities to mix and mingle with the locals that allow our guests to gain insight into day to day life. So if you are looking for an authentic experience (budget or luxury) that takes you off the beaten path, then we are the company for you. And if you want to throw in a little hiking, trekking, rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing, kite-surfing, mule trekking, horseback riding, or even skiing (yes, I said skiing), we can do that, too!"

How did you get involved in travel?

"My path towards a career in travel was a crooked one, but began with a vacation to Morocco in 2012 where I met the most amazing guide, Abderrahman (Abdou for short). He was so amazing, in fact, that after a few more visits we decided to get married. After he had settled into life in the United States, an opportunity presented itself for us to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. And so, after many years of discussion, we "pulled the trigger" and Morocco Immersion was born."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Obviously, my trip to Morocco in 2012 was life changing - talk about transformative travel experiences! Besides meeting my soulmate on that trip, I was mesmerized by the desert and upon my return dreamt about it for 30 nights in a row. Abdou told me that that was the magic of the desert. In subsequent trips, I got to learn more about the culture and meet more of the locals, and that's when I discovered that despite the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes, the true beauty of Morocco is the rich culture and the warmth and generosity of its people. This is the first time we booked a vacation via KimKim and we mainly did it, for peace of mind when traveling with small kids. It was also our first trip to Morocco and we were all very excited about the fact that we were planning to visit more than one city, knowing everything was taken care of.

We had the same guide/driver, Hisham, throughout the trip and he made sure we were comfortable throughout the entire journey, as we went to Fes, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech.

There were many highlights, however I would very much like to name a few..
1. I loved the Riads in Fes and Marrakech... especially Riad Farouzi with its wonderful staff
2. The local guides in Fes and Casablanca... both very knowledgeable and interesting
3. The old Roman city in Volubilis, so very much different to rest of the Morocco we saw
4. But most of all I would like to highlight the fact that we were traveling during the last few days of the holy month Ramandan and the Eid al-Fitr and still we got the best tourguides that we could have asked for

We loved our local guide in Fes, who were our favorite. He knew a lot about the history and we learned about the history, the monarchy, politics, architecture and culture of Morocco. Especially the Jewish Quarter was very exicting. He was very kind to the kids and patient.

Quality of Experience
The information level and knowledge was very high. I also liked the personal stories and opinions.

The guidede tour was very nice. I liked the red thread through out all of the Imperial Cities with the walls surrounding the medinas, the Jewish quarter, the king palaces etc. With the help from our guide I found some lovely carpets and we were invited to see places that we otherwise would not have found ourselves. Compared to Fes, we found Marrakech a bit overcrowded and touristic. However it was Eid and happy days.

Quality of Experience
The guide and the feeling of life in the medina
Guides, Drivers and Staff
I liked walking around with our tourguide. In Fes and Casablanca we met with local guides and I appreciated some time in Marrakesh with our guide and drivers for the tour.
Transport
A bit of walking but very interesting. The motorbikes in the medina however made it difficult to walk around with the kids

Marrakesh

It was very lovely to have some time for ourselves, enjoying the city and plan the day in our own speed. I had under estimated the program with three minors and they were very tired by the end of our vacation. So for my next trip I would arrange more days like these and then skip some cities. However I regret nothing about our plan.

Quality of Experience
Nice and quit morning.
Food
We found some lovely restaurants and cafes
Guides, Drivers and Staff
We had good time to just enjoy an icecream and lunch on a rooftop restaurant

No need for transport. Just walking around Marrakesh

Great tour of Morocco’s varied landscapes and cities. Sallam was an excellent driver, guide and in house historian. He made an extra effort to help us understand and appreciate Berber history and culture and Islamic traditions and practices. Morocco is a very welcoming country for Americans but Sallam is well known in his own right and everyone was happy to see him and this was extended to us. Thanks to Saede for his fabulous tour of Fez and the Medina. Plan on bringing an empty suitcase because it hard to resist all of the wonderful handmade crafts, rugs and leather goods!

I know everyone compliments their guides and planners. I enjoyed and appreciate their care and thoughtfulness. Thank you for combining these wonderful sites into a thrilling 9 days. Morocco Immersion indeed.
My greatest thanks go to Jamal, our driver and manager. It's been over 40 years since I've done a road trip with just the boys. Even better, I didn't have to do any of the driving!
Of course, Jamal was a safe, courteous, and considerate driver. Of course, he offered us many opportunities to stretch our legs or grab a photo. Of course, he had suggestions where we should stop and just enjoy the countryside, feel the sunshine, and smell the air.
I know other drivers will do this too.
Jamal showed me so much more than Morocco. He showed me a people and a culture and an appreciation for this corner of the beautiful blue marble I live on. There is Morocco... and there is Maghreb.
I spent nine days with one of my oldest besties and we were guided through an adventure I couldn't have imagined us ever sharing when we met 50 years ago. He's here. I have that.
I hope you enjoy your Morocco vacation. I know your guides and manager will be thorough and professional.
I pray that you get Jamal as your guide. When you're walking through the departure gate, you'll realize the hand shake and embrace you just received were from a new friend that really cared about creating memories and not just making sure you rode the meanest camel in the caravan.

I can't say enough good things about our experience with Morocco Immersion Tour and Adventures and, in particular, Sharon. From our first conversation she was nothing but available, responsive, and attentive in her planning of our entire trip. We had ideas of stops for the trip, but didn't have a full picture in mind. She took the time to lay out a trip plan, had us weigh in, and tweaked accordingly. She answered any and all questions (of which I had many) and prepared a packing list / materials ahead of our departure so that we knew exactly what to pack and were prepared. We felt so confident that this trip was going to be great - before we even left - because of her planning and support.

The trip itself did not disappoint. The itinerary was so well-timed. Our tour took us beyond the city and into more rural areas, through different landscapes, and gave us the chance to see more of Morocco than we ever would have found on our own. Our hotels were all beautiful. Our tour guides at each city or point of interest were phenomenal - experts on the area and great communicators. And I would be remiss if I didn't call out our guide for the trip - Omar - who drove us around the whole country, made sure we always had everything we needed, that we were enjoying yourselves, and taught us so much (including introducing us to Moroccan and Amazigh music).

10/10 would recommend Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures, Sharon, and her extended team. They will not disappoint!

While the staff are lovely and the rooms comfortable, this is not the hotel for you if you're light sleeper. Positioned on a main road, there's a lot of road noise. Also the room doors have heavy metal bolt closures on them that aren't easy to use. So guests do a lot of door slamming and metal grinding trying to get in and out of their rooms. The hotel is a central open atrium style with tiles, so all internal noise is captured - including people just speaking in their rooms. Even with ear plugs, it wasn't a restful evening. The bathroom was dirty when I arrived - with food and hair on the floor. Be sure to ask for the price of wine if offered to you with dinner. We were charged 400 dirhams (approx USD$40) for the bottle (our mistake though).

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Morocco.

Some things that could have been better: our guide was terrific, but it was impossible to hear him when we were driving. I sat right behind him and could not hear at all. My husband sat behind the passenger seat and heard a little. Not sure how that can be fixed - a microphone, maybe?

The trip to the desert was great as was the stops along the way and the overnight in the desert- top notch, nothing I would change. On the return, we stopped at a kasbah that was closed due to the earthquake. There was no reason to stop there. We then spent the night in a hotel that was about 3 hours outside of Marrakesh. The hotel was in the middle of no where - you could not walk anywhere, so we were stuck in the hotel. The room was in the basement and the prepaid dinner was absolutely awful. The breakfast was fine and the owner was very pleasant. It was truly a wasted day. It would have been much better to drive the three additional hours and get back to Marrakesh later in the evening so we could have had a full day in Marrakesh on our last day in Morocco.

The city tour of Marrakesh was terrific and the Riad that was stayed in on our last night was lovely.

Overall a great experience but I would make some changes in the future.

Hi Naomi,

We are delighted to hear that overall you enjoyed your trip to Morocco. I am sorry, though, to hear that you weren't happy with the accommodations near Ait Ben Haddou. We have already spoken to the manager there and will monitor closely if we use them again. We did plan that stop so that you wouldn't have two long driving days in a row (which was the preference of your travel companion), but we can understand why you may have preferred to go back to Marrakech instead. We also have passed on your feedback to your tour manager in order to improve our services.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review! I hope you had a great holiday season!
