Yassine Echcherki

I'm originally from Sefrou, Morocco, which is located in the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains, Southeast of Fez. In 2010, I started working with Morocco Off the Beaten Track with the vision of bringing local Moroccans together with the rest of the world to encourage understanding and give the gift of worldly experience to all involved. My goal is to always provide a uniquely Moroccan experience, where my travelers can see, feel and taste what makes the Kingdom of Morocco special.

I have worked for the U.S. Peace Corps as an Arabic language instructor and culture trainer, as well as worked with different travel companies in Morocco facilitating and organizing cultural tours and programs. I have also conducted cross-cultural educational programs for several American organizations and taught French and Arabic at a primary school in Citta Del Castelo, Italy. In addition to speaking my native Arabic language, I'm also fluent in French and English.

At Central Washington University in Washington State, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Marketing and a Master's degree in Data Analytics at the same university. I also have volunteered and taught English to Syrian refugees in the greater Seattle area while providing them with localization and life coach services. I strongly believe that cross-cultural education and international learning opportunities are the keys to promoting peace and building long-lasting friendships.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"MOBT Global operates all over Morocco. We want to give our travelers the opportunity to experience the real Morocco far from the touristy places and can plan trips to the larger and Imperial Cities (Marrakesh, Rabat, Fez, Casablanca, etc.). On our tours, we visit villages, meet artisans and farmers, and share food with local people. Our activities include historical and cultural tours, hikes and treks, cooking classes, surfing instruction, 4x4 and camel desert trips, skiing and snowboarding, rafting, rock climbing, and much more."

How did you get involved in travel?

"My goal with MOBT Global is to provide opportunities for travelers to learn about Morocco and to support local Moroccan communities by providing jobs and giving them the experience of interacting with people from other countries. The catalyst for my interest in this was my experience with the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). I was selected to participate in the MEPI Student Leaders Program at Montana State University because of the quality of my leadership experience and community involvement. This prestigious program brings young leaders from North Africa and the Middle East to learn leadership skills and to study democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution. During my time in the USA, I realized how little Americans knew about Morocco and how many misconceptions there were of the Arab world. I decided to work for a travel company that could bridge the gap in understanding Morocco and the US. I had experience working with travel companies in Morocco and had traveled throughout the country myself, so I knew what it would take to be successful with this company and how to create and facilitate outstanding programs for our travelers."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"I will never forget the time I went with my friend to the desert dunes of Merzouga in Morocco. Prior to traveling there, I had not known that Morocco had deserts like this. It was endless rolling dunes of reddish sand, and it took us two hours by camel to reach the oasis we were staying at. At the oasis, I learned different ways to bake bread by the local Berber nomads and got to try their unique foods. Their hospitality was outstanding and was one of the more special things about the trip. In the evening we went to the largest dune in the area and got to see the silver shine of the desert in the moonlight. It was a breathtaking view and something I will never forget."

Luxury Camp Chebbi
Merzouga

We had a wonderful time staying in such comfortable accommodations in the desert. The staff was very welcoming and endearing. Our room was beautifully appointed and was a very fancy tent for being in the desert. The staff did a wonderful job with music entertainment in the evening and worked hard to make sure everyone had a good time. In the morning, we went for a sunrise camel ride. This was a very special experience and the guide was very patient and knowledgeable.

Wow - This was an amazing oasis, right in the Medina of Marrakesh. It looked very modest on the outside, but inside was a tropical paradise. We found we just wanted to spend time at the hotel and lounge by the pool. I also used the spa for a manicure and Hammam treatment (both were wonderful). The breakfast had a wonderful variety and the dinner was also excellent. This was our favorite hotel in Morocco and I hope to return someday.

While we enjoyed this activity, we would have liked to have had more choices over the wines we tasted. Generally they were giving us very generous pours, but we would have preferred more tastings with smaller pours. The wine and appetizers were all very good, but after doing price comparisons later, the prices for wines at the winery were expensive. But the setting for the tasting was absolutely beautiful.

It's hard to put into words, but having traveled all around the world, this was one of my favorite destinations. Our itinerary included Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaoen, Fez, Merzuga, Orarzazate and Marrakech. It's hard to pick a favorite, since every city had a charm all on its own. The drive to the Sahara desert was very long (9 hours), but well worth the experience of riding camels to the the sunrise. Our accommodations were exceptional - from 5 star "palais" to charming riads where we could enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast in the courtyard. This was my first time working with KimKim and planning the trip with Yassine was a great experience - he offered suggestions and accommodated our requests for a visit to wine country, a cooking class, cultural experiences, etc. Also gave us tips and answered ALL of our questions about the trip. And our driver, Yousine, was top notch - would definitely request him if we return. I've never had a driver throughout the whole trip and he made it extra special by driving us everywhere - not only to the different cities/sites, but to dinner, helping get our laundry done in town, giving us local restaurant recommendations (always excellent), and most importantly, being a safe and knowledgeable driver.

My husband and I had an amazing time in Morocco! The upfront planning was easy with Louis Shannon, his communication was clear and timely, and he has a great personality. I am a planner so I had done research before contacting kimkim which I found helpful, but you could easily leave it to them to plan. Our driver and guide, Younes Bouaid, was fantastic from start to finish! Younes was professional, fun, and became a friend during our travels. He had great tips and advice for each area we visited, the car was always clean, very comfortable, had great Wi-Fi, and he was a very safe driver. We tried to do 2-3 nights in each location so we could experience areas and not rush, we visited Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Boumalne Dades, Merzouga (Sahara Desert), Fes, and Rabat. We enjoyed all the places we stayed, and the breakfast included was always delicious.

In Marrakesh we stayed at 72 Riad Living, loved it! Amazing Riad in the old town with a beautiful rooftop area and pool, the courtyard was really nice and very relaxing, the breakfast was always good and the dinner we had there was possibly our best meal of the trip, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The tours we did in Marrakesh were fun and very educational from a historic and cultural perspective. We did a 2-hour food tour with Moulay Rachid and an all-day tour with another wonderful guide. Definitely do a cooking class, we did ours at Cafe Clock and had a wonderful time. 4 nights.

In Ouarzazate we stayed at Kasbah Isfoula. Smaller boutique hotel with lovely rooms, nice bar and restaurant, fun artwork, and a pretty rooftop excellent for relaxing and enjoying view. I would not recommend the movie studio tour, the sets were not great, it is not like Universal Studios or other experience we have done. Also, the staff was very disinterested and bored. 1 night.

In Boumalne Dades we stayed at Auberge Chez Pierre. Beautiful area to visit, I wish we had more time there. The hotel is lovely and has a beautiful pool. The room was spacious and very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast we had at the restaurant was delicious. 1 night

In Merzouga (Sahara Desert) we stayed at the Luxury Camp Chebbi. The camel ride in was fun, tents were really nice, and the food was good. The staff was friendly, and we enjoyed the music by the fire. By doing the 2 nights we were able to do an interesting tour to see how the Amazigh live, look for fossils, explore the geography, and visit the Gwana and hear a maalem group perform. One tip, if you would like wine at the camp I would recommend buying at the hotel and taking it in with you, half the price, or checking what the price is before going to the camp so you are not overcharged like we were (we did get a refund).

In Fes we stayed at Palais Amani, beautiful Riad on the outskirts of the old city. The courtyard was stunning, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Loved the breakfast and enjoyed our dinner there. The room was spacious, and the rooftop area was very relaxing and has great views of the city and mountains. We also did the Hamam and a massage at the hotel and loved it! There is a cooking school that looked really nice as well. The tour we did with Fatima Zahra Hanafi was excellent and a real treat to have a female guide which is rare. We also had a delicious dinner at Riad Fes which also looked nice to stay at. The only thing we did not like on the tour was the tannery because of the smells. 3 nights.

In Rabat we stayed at Riad Kalaa, smaller Riad with a nice courtyard and rooftop with a small pool. The food was nice, and the room was spacious and comfortable. I also really liked the artwork and ambiance of the shared spaces. The sunset in Rabat was beautiful and enjoyed our brief time there. 2 nights.

In Merzouga (Sahara Desert) we stayed at the Luxury Camp Chebbi. The camel ride in was fun, tents were really nice, and the food was good. The staff was friendly, and we enjoyed the music by the fire. The one full day we were there they did not communicate they were doing some work on the tents and that we would need to go to the hotel for a few hours after our tour. This caused some confusion with our tour guide who in the end took us back to the camp so we could get a our swimmers for the pool at the hotel. Also, we were overcharged for wine the first night and only found out because we went to the hotel. We did receive a refund after we requested it. I am giving 3 stars because of the lack of communication, the overcharge and how the manager handled it, and the awkwardness both situations caused . This arrangement can result in some people getting motion sickness from facing backwards. The people in Morocco were very friendly. The hotel in Casablanca was very good and the staff was very friendly and accommodating: Barcelo Anfa. The breakfast at the hotel was amazing. The riads were just okay. Very nice looking, but not very well insulated from outside noises on the street and we were awoken each early morning (about 2:30 am and 5 am) by the call to prayer as it was Ramadan. Breakfasts at the riads were just okay; mostly a lot of different breads with yogurt and some fruit. Tour of Fes medina was very interesting. Other medinas were nice but very repetitive. The cooking class was very long; approximately 4 hours. The instructor was very nice, but it was too long. Would have preferred a food tour, but that was not available due to Ramadan. Tour of Volubulis was very interesting. Would have liked to spend more than 1 hour. We would not do the hammam again. We were sent in without a change of under garments or swimsuits, no one spoke English inside the hammam and it was bit awkward trying to figure out what to do and when it was finally complete.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your recent trip to Morocco. I appreciate the opportunity to address your comments.

I’m glad to hear that you felt your driver Younes was accommodating to your family. I certainly hope that none of you felt sick in the vehicle due to the seating arrangement. We make sure to have newer, spacious vehicles for all of our trips, and the facing seating arrangement is designed to encourage a social atmosphere on the trip. We have never heard any complaints about it in the past, but I appreciate you bringing it up. In regard to the amount of driving, on the trip plan that is shared with you during the planning process and the final trip plan that you confirm, the estimated drive time is listed on each day to give you an indication of how the trip will go.

I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in the hotel in Casablanca and that you felt they had a good breakfast. I am sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your time in the traditional riads. These accommodations are historical buildings located in the medinas, which are the busiest and most energetic areas of the cities. Due to the condensed nature of these areas, they can be noisier than more remote hotels outside of the historical areas. This is the first time we have had anyone mention being awoken by to the call to prayer though, so we are quite surprised.

Riads also serve traditional Moroccan breakfasts which consist of numerous freshly made breads, along with yogurt, fresh fruit, and olive oil. These are typically the best, homemade breakfasts you can have in Morocco aside from enjoying a meal at a local’s home, so we are quite surprised that you didn’t enjoy them. The riads can typically accommodate additional options when asked, so I wish we would have known that you were not pleased with the breakfasts during the trip so we could have made adjustments in the moment.

It’s so good to hear that your private guided Fes Medina tour was interesting. You mentioned that the other medinas were repetitive. It is common in most cities where locals live that there are similarities between them as the basic necessities are all there. I hope that despite the similarities you enjoyed experiencing the uniqueness of each location and learned more about Moroccan culture.

My apologies for not explaining that the cooking class would take that long for you to prepare your meals from scratch. I do appreciate your flexibility in doing this substitute activity instead of the guided food tour.

I’m sad to hear that you didn’t enjoy your hammam visit. In our final email to you with the final trip documents, we did go over your need to bring a change of clothes. This is usually a highlight of trips for our travelers, and, unfortunately, you didn’t enjoy the experience.

Speaking of the final email that we sent, we also included some information about the luggage porters that could help you get your luggage from the gates of the medina to your accommodations and how much they cost. We were displeased to hear that you insisted on only paying the porter who assisted you 50 cents and that your driver had to cover the difference with his own money because the porter was so insulted.

While I wish that you would have enjoyed your trip more, I do appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback. We always work hard to provide all the information that we can to our travelers before their trips and make sure that everything within our control is planned in detail. There are always areas we can improve, and I will share your feedback with my team. I hope that overall, your Moroccan experience was great for your family, and I appreciate you choosing us to plan your trip.

Rooms, service, and breakfast were excellent at all of our stays. Our driver (also named Yassine) was the best! He was fantastic; driving us through all sorts of weather, during Ramadan, and always with a warm smile. He helped organize our in country activities, coordinating with our guides, hammam, and cooking class...showing us to our Riads, etc. He was also helpful with dinner and sighteeing recommendations. He was really our main contact throughtout and he made the trip a memorable one for us. As for planning, the trip was super easy to plan with Yassine! I had done some research and shared my ideas at the start, and Yassine crafted them in to a fabulous itinerary. He was responsive to our changes and many questions and made helpful suggestions. Great experience overall. Will recommend to all of our friends!

Amazingly beautiful and comfortable Riad. The green tiles and complementary textiles are stunning. So many colorful and tasteful touches throughout. It felt very upscale, but welcoming. Breakfast on the terrace was a nice touch. Food was delicious and service was kind, quick, and courteous. It is about a 20 min walk to the main square, which we did not mind as it was good exercise (just be mindful you need to cross some busy streets). But closer to Saadian tombs, Cafe Clock, and other sites. Highly recommend.

This was the first time I used a tour operator to help construct an itinerary as I usually like to do it on my own. I was still able to build my own itinerary as we opted for a private tour but having Yassine's knowledge of the country was priceless. And Younes, our driver, was amazing and helped make our trip and experience that much better. He was with us every step of the way and he made us feel more like family than tourists. My kids (ages 7 and 9) still say how they miss him since we've come back home. I would definitely recommend KimKim to help plan your next adventure, and if you can opt for both Yassine and Younes don't hesitate!!
